He was listed as a freeholder in a return of 1630. His will was proved PCC 14 Mar 1654. He married Elizabeth Hales*, 30 Sep 1622 in Exhall, Warwickshire, buried 8 Dec 1658 in Wigston. * Elizabeth could have been the daughter of Timothy Hales and Elizabeth Ashley who was baptised on 8 June 1589; Timothy was the brother of Sir Charles Hales of Newnham, their father was recorded in the 1619 Warwickshire Visitation as Stephanus Hales de Newland in the County of Warwickshire, armigerous. Equally possible however is that she was the Elizabeth, baptised on 20 December 1604, a daughter of Sir Charles’s son Stephen and his wife Abigail Walter. If the former it would account for the fact that they had only four children as she would have been 42 when George was born. If the latter she would have probably been about 17 at the time of her marriage (John was 42) but it would be consistent with them choosing the names Abigail and Stephen for two of their children. More evidence is required to resolve the matter. In her burial entry Elizabeth is described as GENTLEWOMAN | | |
