| | Notes: | Captain John Rogers, the first of this family in Virginia, was born about 1620,[1] a subject of the Kingdom of England. Transported to Virginia 18 April 1638.[citation needed] He made his mark for cattle in Northumberland Co. in 1652.[2]He purchased 250 acres in Northumberland County from James Claughton on 20 Jan. 1652/3 and on 13 Sept. 1654 took out a patent for 50 acres on the south side of Claughtons Creek adjoining this land and also for 250 acres adjoining. He became a justice of Northumberland County in May 1655, was a captain in the militia, and was a vestryman of Chicacone Parish. On 1 May 1665 he took the appointed oaths as Sher iff for the ensuing year. On 30 Nov. 1656 Capt. John Rogers repatented the 300 acres he had originally patented in 1654. He added another 200 acres on 31 Aug. 1657 and on 9 Jan . l662/3 repatented this land and his 250 acres originally patented in l654. The name of his first wife Ellen is shown on the tombstones of both husbands of their daughter Elizabeth (Rogers) Keene Banks at Cypress Farm, Northumberland County. Before Sept. 1668 he married his second wife Anne (______) Temple Clay, widow of John Temple and Francis Clay.[3] Proof of second wife[4] Northumberland County Court 8th of September 1668 - Whereas Mr. JUSTINIAN GERRARD, who maryed ye Relicte of Mr. WILKS MAUNDER, deced., did exhibite an Accot: against Capt. JOHN ROGERS, who maryed ye Relicte of Mr. FRANCIS CLAY, for nineteene hundred & fifty pounds of tobacco & caske for goods delivered to yt. valew, & Capt. ROGERS did exhibite an Accot. against ye sd. Mr: GERRARD for fifteene hundred eighty & nine pounds of tobacco & caske for goods to ye sd. valew; It is ordered yt: both parties doe retourne to each other ye like goods in kinde in ye same condicon as received by ye last of Janry. nex
