Jokingly when visiting my grandmother (Marilyn Davenport Basham) I asked if she had celebrated the day with grandparents when young. She assured the “holiday” wasn’t recognized, but that she had spent a lot of time in their home--Houston & Mildred Stratton Davenport. The two had nine children together and the family would routinely gather with their children and grandchildren on Sundays. Mamaw said they lived at the corner of Riverside Benleo Road & Ridge Road. Mamaw and her family lived just below the hill in a small white house that years later was moved up the hill to sit on the Riverside-Benleo Road. During her childhood the two houses were separated by thick woods, but the family had worn a path between the two. Mamaw explained that her grandfather Houston suffered from kidney issues. To her, it seemed the family always called on her and her elder brother Bobby to help the grandparents. One night when she was around 12 to 13 years old (so around 1945/1946), she recalled being in their home and instructed by Mildred to go and fetch help due to Houston’s condition worsening--he was going to have to be taken to town for medical attention. Terrified, Mamaw was given a lantern and sent off into the woods to alert her father back at home. Shortly before or after midnight, Mamaw recalls it being the creepiest walk of her life. Darkness was so thick you could almost feel it. Each step taken was greeted by the hooting of an owl. When she exited the woods and saw her homeplace in sight, terror continued. Off in the distance she could see another lantern flickering and headed in her direction. As the lantern in question continued to approach she was soon relieved to recognize it was her father, RT Davenport. To this day she hasn’t been able to figure out how he knew she was approaching--these were before the days of electricity and telephones. Perhaps in those days the need for help was better sensed.
