Occupation: farmer, constable, surveyor, jurior, Farmer, Constable, Surveyor, Juror John Cowles, immigrant ancestor, was born in England, and was among the early settlers of Hartford, Connecticut . Not long after the year 1640 he located at Farmington, Connecticut, and in 1652 was one of those who organized the church there. He was born in the west of England, it is thought, about 1598 . He bought land on the corner at the north end of Farmington village, known afterward as the Dr. Thompson and Bodwell places. Selling this property, he bought three lots just south of the present meeting house and built a house there. He spelled his name Cowles in order to distinguish himself from another man named Cole of the same town, and from that time to the present the descendants of his eldest son Samuel have spelled the name Cowles and those of the youngest son John have, until the beginning of the nineteenth century, favored the spelling Cowls. He was a farmer. He was deputy to the general assembly from Farmington in 1653-54. In 1659 he was one of the signers who started the settlement at Hadley, Massachusetts, but was probably not there among the first, being a resident at Hadley in 1662. He was one of the twenty-five "engagers" in Hadley to establish themselves in Hatfield "across the river" before March, 1661. His record in Hatfield begins January 14, 1660-61, according to the records of that place, and he died there September, 1675, and was probably buried there. He was one of a committee that laid out a burying place for the town, February 14, 1669, and there was no other cemetery there until 1848. His widow Hannah, after his death, went to live with son-in-law, Caleb Stanley , of Hartford, where she died March 16, 1683, and she was buried there. Her will was dated October 27, 1680, and in it she states that her husbands last will was dated December 11, 1674. The homestead in Hatfield was in possession of descendants until April, 1898.

He removed to Northampton, Mass., about 1655, there was killed by the Indians, March 14, 1676. . John Cowles went with his father to Hadley, Mass,, and settled in that part afterwards called Hatfield. He may have accompanied his father in 166o, but whether he remained there or returned to Conn., and went back again with the family in 1664 is not known. He w.1s selectman in 1682, 1683 and 168g; Constable March 16go; freeman-May 30,_ 16go.- In 1698 he signed his name to an agre,;ment as John Cols, but it appears as Cowles in the record of his · narriage. illd the settlement of his estate. JOHN COWLES, son of Samuel2 (2), b. Jan. 28, 1670-1 · at Farmington, Conn.; d. Oct. 9, 1748 at Farmington (gravestone) ; m. Experience Chappell but had no children. He inherited the middle part of his fathers house lot. In his will dated :Tan. 8, 1746-7, he mentions his wife Experience Cowles and sevenil relatives, but gives to his cousin (great-nephew) Nathaniel Cowles (No. 227), then living with him, all of his real estate and most. of his personal property and constituted him executor. Porter says that John Cowles gave his house and lot and most of his property to his nephew, Nathaniel Cowles (No. 100), who guaranteed his support during life; that for many of the last years of his life he was superannuated and helpless and a burden to Nathaniels widow and his son, Nathaniel, whose father died in 1724. John Cowles will tends to contradict this statement in part at least, as no proof has been found that he gave Nathaniel (No. 100) his property. In 1727 he was appointed guardian to Nathaniel Cowles (No. 227), a minor two years of age, and in 1741 Nathaniel Cowles, 16 · years of .age, chose. Deacon Hart to be his guardian .. _ The widow of Nathaniel (No. 100) :i;narried again in 1728 and it is not probable that John Cowles was a burden to her afterwards, if at all.

(from Cowles Families in America)
According to tradition, John came directly from England to Virginia, and settled near Williamsburg, James City County, but he was the immigrant ancestor admits of grave doubt.
It is not uncommon for families when they reach the name of the last known ancestor to conclude that he was the original immigrant, whereas he may have been born in the immediate neighborhood.
The present case may be no exception to the general rule and it would be well to bear in mind that all the branches of the Cowles family of Virginia may be descended from Richard Cowles who was in Virginia in 1614 and perhaps earlier.
Thomas is the only child of John Cowles mentioned in the tradition but from the evedence contained in the will of John Cooper, he probably had other children listed below.
The name of his wife is unknown.
If the inference is correct that he names one of his sons Edmund, of which there can be but little doubt, the presumption is strong that he was a descendent of Edmund Cowles who was in Charles City County and James City County, VA, in 1666 and perhaps earlier, and who patented land which had been bought by Richard Cowles in 1614, perhaps his father. THOMAS (1) COWLES, according to tradition, came from England about 1700, with his wife, Obedience, to Lobbs Landing, James City County, Va., and bought Lobbs Landing and the old homestead, a farm called Cowlesville, which remains in the Cowles family to as late as 1920. Cowlesville is situated about 2 1/2 miles east of the mouth of Diascund Creek. The Lobbs farm, also owned by the Cowles family, is bounded on the north by Cowlesville and on the south by Chickahominy River (Appendix III). Tradition is untrustworthy and, for various reasons stated in the Introduction, the compiler is of the opinion that Thomas Cowles was a native of Virginia and a descendant of Richard Cowles of Kenniges Creek, Charles City County (Appendix VI). The following description of the old homestead was written by one of the family in 1901: "I was born and raised at the old Cowles farm in James City County, Va. No one knows when this house was built as it is quite a curiosity to see the massive hewn timbers in the basement. Of course it has been kept up until the old place has partially lost its old colonial style. We still own this place, and there is the old burying-ground with so many ancestors, but strange to say, though they all seemed persons of means, there is not a stone to mark the graves." It is said that Thomas and Obedience Cowles had eleven sons and daughters, but the name of only one child, John, is given; another son went to near Baltimore and another to North Carolina, it is said. Eleven children, but the names of ten are unknown.

Upon a monument in the Cemetery are· ·the following inscriptions: "Erected by:the Town of Meriden~ ·1857, in memory of the first settlers of the Town of Meriden who were buried within and near the enclosure, and whose names are inscribed· on this monument. The Meeting House in which they worshipped, and the first erected in the Town, stood about fifty rods west of this monument." Among others· the following names ·appear: Joseph Cowles, Nov. 30, 176o, aged 83; · Mindwell Cowles, April 17, 1770, aged Sg. The following extract is taken from "A Century of Meriden," published in 1go6: . "The first of the· Cowles family to live in Meriden was Joseph who came from Farmington and married Abigail, daughter of, Samuel Royce on July 13, 1699. His father-in-law gave him .!l farm jiist south of Atcher• comer in South Farms district, and in the year 1701, 107 acres up the bill on the old highway down which we fancy the good parson (Hall) d~- ing after stopping, perhaps, to chat with some of the Cowles family, who were always prominent in church matters. It is difficult to believe that ·on the summit of this hill, called Ox Hill, there .was once a colony of Cowlaes and also Rices, for as far as the writer can discover, there is not ·the least remnant of the depression of a cellar to mark the site of a house · anywhere in the vicinity, but there is no doubt that here they lived forr several generations."

May 12, 1685, . in Farmington, Conn., Rachel, dau. of Thomas and Sarah (Hart) Porter of Farmington, Conn. Sarah Hart was a daughter of Deacon Stephen Hart of Farmington. The name of Rachel · does not appear in ihe list of Thomas Porters children in the Stephen Hart-geneal_~gy. nor in his will or that of Stephen Hart, but Rev. W. S. Porter says she was a daughter of Thomas Porter and granddaughter of Deacon Stephen Hart, a fact proven beyond a doubt by the follo\Ying entry in the Farmington, Conn. Land Records, Vol. 2, p. 328: "Rachell Porter, daughter of Thomas Porter was Baptized Desem. the twenty and six one thousand, six hundreth, fifty and eight." There was no other Thomas Porter there of marriageable age at that time. She died Oct. 4, I 7 43, at Kensington, Conn. In the Gay and Shepard Collections at the Conn. Hist. Soc. Library her parentage, baptism, marriage and death appear as recorded herein. Thomas Porters seven daughters were all living when he made his will in 16c)o-1, but the only one mentioned in it was Dorothy Porter. All the others, then being married, perhaps had received their portions of his estate, or were not mentioned for ·reasons now unknown. Mr. Samuel Cowles inherited the ~rt. of his fathers home lot known as the Pitkin place, and later on the Dr. Carrington place, which he gave to his son Thomas Cowles and removed to Kensington in the town of Farmington, Conn., before 1716 (Porter MS.). It may have been much earlier as he and his brothers, Isaac and Caleb, signed a petition Oct. 11, 1705, for authority for the settlement of an Ecclesiastical Society at a place called the "Great Swamp." The authority was granted and the Parish (Kensington), proceeded to build a meeting house, date unknown, on "Christian Lane," just south of the Middletown Railroad. The church was organized Dec. 101 1712, of which he was a deacon (Porter MS.), but the latter statement is not supported by the church records. The cemetery is on "Christian Lane" a few rods north of the above mentioned railroad, but if any members of the Cowles family were buried there, their graves are unmarked. A huge boulder placed there by the Daughters of the American Revolution bears the name of Cowles among the other founders of the Parish of Kensington. They also erected a monument on the site of the original church. Mr. Samuel Cowles was appointed townsman of Farmington, May, 1702, by the General Assembly of Conn., for one year. "He was a man of small size, rather spare, eyes brown, hair of a light cast, legs small and trim ; with a tum peculiar to the Cowles family, reserved in conversation, steady in mind and of a mild disposition, and not easily provoked to a passion." He and his wife joined the Farmington Church, May 25, 16c)o. He and his mother were named as executors of his fathers will dated Farmington, Conn., April 15, 1691, which provided that, in addition to land already given him, he should have a double portion of all of his fathers real estate.

Oct. 15, 1768 at Farmington · (gravestone), dau. of Capt. Thomas and Sarah (Freeman) Judd of Waterbury, Conn. Capt. Judd was deputy to the General Court Oct. 1696 and many subsequent terms; many times townsman; school committees; rate maker, etc.; ensign in 1702-3 until 1715 when promoted to be first Captain of the Waterbury trainband. He was son of William and Mary (Steele) Judd, and grandson of Thomas Judd and John and Rachel (Talcott) Steele of Farmington, Conn., the emigrants. "Mr. Worshipful" John Talcott, of Hartford, Conn., brother of Rachel (Talcott) Steele, was the father of Lieut.-Col. John Talcott, of Hartford, one of the patentees named in the ChartPr or Patent of the Colony of Connecticut granted by Charles II in 166-?, and one of the three custodians of the same from that date, ancf it is now claimed, on good authority, that he saved the Charter from falling into the hands of Sir Edmund Andros in 1687, and not Joseph Wadsworth as tradition says. Joseph Talcott, son of Lieut.-Col. John, was governor of the Colony of Connecticut from 1725 to 1742 and the governors son, Joseph, was treasurer of the Colony from 1756 to 176g. A sister of Rachel (Talcott) Steele was the wife of William Wadsworth of Hartford, the progenitor of the distinguished Wadsworth family of Connecticut. . Capt. Thomas Judd in. Feb. 9, 1687-8, Sarah, dau. of Stephen and Hannah (Astwood) Freeman of Milford, Conn., and later of Newark, N. J. Hannah was a daughter of Capt. John Astwood of Milford, Conn. Thomas Cowles was somewhat taller than his father, brown hair, blue eyes, small trim legs, mild disposition, reserved in conversation, affectionate to his family and friends, attentive to his business and Calvinistic in his religion. Mr. Thomas Cowles lived on his fathers place in Fannington, known in 1850 as the Dr. Carrington place. His will, and ·also that of his wife Martha, are on file in the State Library at Hartford, Conn.

He signed the Jubilee paper issued by bishop Madison at Jamestown, May 1 3, 1807 In 1807, a dignified celebration marked the bicentennial of Jamestown. Som etimes referred to as "Virginiad," the celebration was most commonly call ed the Grand National Jubilee. No less than 3,500 people attended the even t. Twelve to 14 vessels anchored in the river near the island to deliver m any of the participants. College of William and Mary students gave oratio ns and a company of players from Norfolk performed, converting an old ba rn on the island into a temporary theater. There were many dignitaries, po liticians, and historians among the celebrants. One of these, Jamestown s own Colonel Champion Travis, was honored as a surviving member of the V irginia Convention of 1776--first to declare for state independence. May 1 3th was the opening day of the festival, which began with a procession whi ch marched to the graveyard of the old church. The attending bishop report edly stood on a tombstone to deliver the prayer. The procession then mov ed to the Travis mansion. The celebrants dined and danced in the mansion t hat evening. Jamestown claimed the life of another victim when a young m an succumbed to heat stroke and "too free use of ice in cider." Visitors a ttended his funeral on the 14th. The Bicentennial celebration concluded with a dinner and toast at the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg.

Thomas Cowles was raised in James City County, Virginia with at least 2 siblings. There were multiple generations of related Cowles family branches in Virginia, that used the same names for their sons; in particular the names Thomas and John. This has resulted in conflicting research. However, all versions of genealogy show the Cowles were a wealthy family that lived around the Chickahominy River in Virginia, in the counties of James City and Charles City. THOMAS COWLES, son of John (1). Perhaps he was the Thomas Cowles elected as member of a Committee of Safety by the fee holders of James City Co., Va., Nov. 25, 1794. He was born and raised in James City County and probably resided on or near Chickahominy River. Virginia Gazette – 1776 To be sold immediately on CHICKAMONY River, a very valuable Track of LAND, consisting of upwards of 800 Acres, with my Ferry and Ordinary, having necessary buildings on the Plantation, and also a fine Apple Orchard. The Land abounds with good Pine Timber, and there is a large Quantity of Marsh which is very valuable for Stock of all kinds, and also convenient for fishing and fowling. Any Person inclined to purchase the said Tract may know the Terms by applying to the Subscriber, who lives on the premises. CHARLES CITY, October 31, 1776 , THOMAS COWLES - - - Virginia Gazette - 1776 It gives us PAIN, my Lord, to find that the Indians have made fresh Encroachments and Disturbances on out Frontiers. We have only to request that Your Excellency will be pleased to exert those Powers with which you are fully invested, by the Acts of Assembly for making Provision against Invasions and Insurrections; which we doubt not, will be found sufficient to repel the hostile and perfidious Attempts of those and barbarous Enemies. Thomas wife was NOT Elizabeth Crawley. I suspect this misinformation is caused by a 1774 marriage record to Elizabeth Crawley in York County, Virginia. That marriage record is for a different Thomas Cowles who was living Charles City County, Virginia. Our Thomas was in James City VA, not Charles City VA. There are references in book "Genealogy of the Cowles Family in America" page 1128-1133 that confirm Elizabeth Crawley was married to a different Thomas Cowles.

He was the oldest of 3 sons. After arriving from Virginia, his father purchased a large estate in Edmonson County, Kentucky. Vincent married Polly Norris at age 21. Some sources refer to Vincents wife as Patsey King, and suggest the King family migrated to Kentucky with the Cowles. It is possible Vincent was married more that once. Vincent and his wife settled on a farm in nearby Warren County to raise their children. Their children went to school, some into their teenage years, but apparently it was sporadic, since later census records indicate most of their children could not read or write. All of the children became farmers, and some settled close to Vincent and Polly, but most of their children relocated to the Edmonson area, possibly on land which Vincent had inherited from his father. Vincents wife passed away around the age of 60. Vincent still had several unmarried children in their 20s living at home, and he was also raising several grandchildren. By the time he reached his 80s, Vincent had moved in with the family of his youngest son. His exact date of death is unknown, but he was last located at age 83 in the Bristow area of Warren County.
